Reflections of an 80s Keyboard Player: Andrew’s 80s Music Concert Experiences and Meeting Heroes
10/15/13 Waited my whole life to see Simple Minds in concert and finally got to see them at the amazing Orpheum Theatre in Lost Angeles, California! The show was amazing – they played all the hits and worked the crowd like it was an 80,000+ soccer stadium. During “Don’t You Forget About Me”, I saw a gentleman run down to the foot of the stage from his seat and Jim Kerr exclaimed, “Keith!!” I immediately knew who he meant and made a mental note of where he was sitting. After the concert we walked over and introduced ourselves and got to meet the legendary songwriter, musician and producer, Keith Forsey. He was in charge of the music for the movie “The Breakfast Club”, produced and co-wrote “Don’t You Forget About Me” (produced the actual track itself), and was involved in countless other hit songs and blockbuster movie soundtracks from the 70’s and all through the 80’s!
8/18/14 The night before this concert, I bumped into legendary songwriter/musician/singer/producer David Paich of the band Toto on Bourbon Street (when I said hi the next night at the concert, he remembered my name!) Saw Toto perform at House of Blues in New Orleans and the show was naturally, amazing. After the show, we waited around outside and we got to also meet the other legendary guys from Toto, Steve Lukather, Joseph Williams (son of famous film composer John Williams) and Steve Porcaro. They couldn’t have been nicer folks!
9/8/14 Saw the Retro Futura show in Dallas with the 80’s superstars Howard Jones, Tom Bailey of The Thompson Twins, Katrina of Katrina & The Waves, Midge Ure, and China Crisis. They all played all of their hits and the show was awesome! We hung out at the back of the concert hall after the show and ended up meeting one of my all-time 80’s synth/musician/producer/songwriter/singer heroes, Tom Bailey. He couldn’t have been a nicer dude!
